Oxford House, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that pioneered the Oxford House Model in 1975, providing community-based, supportive, and sober living environments for individuals recovering from substance use disorders. Founded when residents of a closing halfway house in Montgomery County, Maryland, took over the property to create self-run, self-supported recovery homes, Oxford House emphasizes recovery, responsibility, and replication through democratically governed residences where members elect officers for six-month terms, share equal expenses, and maintain 100% drug and alcohol-free living by immediately expelling any member who relapses. The model, recognized as an evidence-based practice by the National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices, supports long-term sobriety without time limits, fostering leadership, self-efficacy, and peer support while integrating active participation in Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous. With over 3,500 houses across 47 states housing more than 24,000 residents at any time, including special populations such as women with children, veterans, and those with co-occurring mental health disorders, Oxford House, Inc. issues no-cost charters, provides technical assistance, and promotes expansion through chapters, associations, and field staff to help recovering individuals achieve and maintain sobriety, reduce incarceration, and improve employment outcomes.
