Oxford House - Northaven
Oxford House, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that pioneered the Oxford House Model in 1975, providing self-run, self-supported recovery homes for individuals recovering from substance use disorders. Founded when residents of a closing halfway house in Montgomery County, Maryland, took over the property and established democratic governance to ensure sobriety, Oxford House has expanded to over 3,500 houses across 47 states, housing more than 24,000 people at any time. The model emphasizes community-based, supportive, sober living environments where residents elect officers for six-month terms, share equal expenses, and immediately expel anyone using drugs or alcohol, fostering long-term recovery without time limits on stays. Rooted in principles of self-help, disciplined democracy, and self-support, Oxford Houses promote active participation in AA and NA, accommodate special populations like women with children and veterans, and have demonstrated evidence-based success through studies showing significantly lower relapse rates, reduced criminal involvement, and improved employment outcomes compared to usual care.
